Are you doing everything that you can to protect your organization from the catastrophe that will come from the theft or loss of PII? The checklist below can help you to determine whether you are currently taking all the prudent and necessary steps:

	Are you storing files containing PII records in encrypted format so that unauthorized users cannot gain access to them? (If not, you are putting your organization at grave risk.)
	Do you encrypt all PII records and files that are transmitted across public networks? (If you are using email and email attachments to send PII to and receive PII from customers and business partners then most likely your data is not encrypted and is subject to theft.)
	Is access to files containing PII records limited to those persons who have a legitimate reason for that access? (If not, your PII can be stolen by unauthorized employees and contractors.)
	Do you have monitoring in place to alert you to the occurrence of unauthorized use of or access to PII? (Without monitoring, you will never know that your PII is being stolen until it is too late.)
	Are files containing PII stored only as long as reasonably necessary to to comply with state or federal regulations and then automatically deleted? (Saving PII for longer than necessary puts you at risk.)
